Counselling

Counselling and psychotherapy and are about being able to talk to someone about aspects of your life in a safe and supportive environment. You can find ways of making sense of your concerns or experiences and this can lead to a more satisfactory, effective and fulfilled life.

Counselling is often shorter-term, goal-focussed work, looking at a specific issue or event, to increase understanding and possibly make changes. Psychotherapy is often a longer-term and deeper process to understand better yourself and your relationships with others. Counselling and psychotherapy are processes where what we talk about remains confidential unless there is a risk of significant harm to yourself for others.

My name is Neil MacFarlane and I am BACP Accredited Counsellor/Psychotherapist, Life Coach and Careers Adviser. I have been practising therapy for over 20 years. I help people reflect on and resolve short-term issues or longer-term difficulties. I am professional, ethical, constructive, approachable, and supportive and use a variety of approaches including Transactional Analysis (original diploma), Gestalt, Psychoanalysis, CBT and EMDR. I keep very up to date with developments (e.g. NeuroPsychoTherapy) and teach on a Humanistic counselling course. I offer weekday and sometimes Saturday sessions. I have worked in Rape and Sexual Abuse counselling, in a Drug and Alcohol Service and as a counsellor in a secondary school.
